Former PGA Pro Billy
Casper at Stonebridge's Grand Re-opening!
US
Open Champion (1959 and 1966) and Master's
Champion (1970) Billy Casper was on hand at
Stonebridge
Golf Club
to celebrate the completion of the new Champion
Bermuda greens. He offered two chipping
and putting clinics at 9 and 1 and was available
for pictures and autographs.
Casper told
the morning crowd that he rarely used wedges
when chippinghe almost always used shorter
irons. His goal was to get the ball on the
green as fast as possible, then allow the ball
to run towards the hole. The results of his
chips were pretty impressive as most were within
3 feet of the hole he was aiming at and a few
even dropped in.
Casper then
discussed his ideas on putting. He said
your putter blade will do exactly what the top
of your left hand does. Keep the left hand
square, and you'll keep the putter square.
He also said the most important aspect of
putting isn't speed but the ability to read
greens. He said the best use of practice
time on the green is to work on putting within a
3-foot radius. He said to find a hole that
was on a slope and work your way around it.
That way, you'll get to work on hitting balls
that break left and right, and go up- and
downhill.
"If I can
leave you with anything, it's to be positive,"
he said. "Think positive and you'll be
more successful."
