May 5-6, 2012
There are several things about the Alvin Everett
Invitational that makes it special and exiting
year after year. This year was no
different.
To begin with, it’s the first “Individual”
tournament of the year on the
Rome Tour. If
you’ve never played in an individual stroke play
tournament, you don’t know what you’re missing!
The Alvin Everett is also one of the oldest
tournaments in our area—spanning more than 75
years—and played on one of the oldest courses in
our area,
Callier Springs Country Club.
It is really neat seeing all the names and dates
on the original trophy kept in the clubhouse.
Then there’s the excitement of the tournament
itself. Fittingly, it took an extra hole between
Brad Crowe and Martin Ball, two of the Rome
area's best players to decide this year’s
champion. Both Crowe and Ball are multiple Rome
Tour Champions as each has won many tournaments
over the past years.
Ball shot a final round of 68 (-2) to catch
Crowe, who shot even par 70, and force the
sudden death playoff. Both players
finished the two-day event at 135 (-5). In the
playoff on the par 4 first hole, Ball's drive
found the sand as Crowe's narrowly missed. Ball
then blasted out nicely to 3 feet. However,
Crowe’s second shot ended up just inches from
the hole for a tap in birdie. When Ball’s putt
caught part of the hole and stayed out, the
tournament title belonged to Crowe.
Finishing 3rd in the Championship Flight was
Jaylon Ellison, who shot rounds of 68 – 72
(140).
In the First Flight, past Alvin Everett Champion
Ethan Lambert posted rounds of 76 – 76 (152) to
take first. After a scorecard backup Mike
Hartman, who shot 79 – 74 (153), claimed second
over Callier’s own Spencer Lee, who shot 78 – 75
(153).
The Second Flight saw Ann Perry take first with
rounds of 81 – 77 (158) over Holly Gaston, who
shot 85 -77 (162). Jon Kendrick finished 3rd
with rounds of 81 – 82 (163).
Congratulations to all the Flight winners and
participants!
Remember, the next Rome Tour – Individual
tournament is the Cherokee Invitational in
Cedartown on May 19-20.
